What Causes Skin Blemishes on Your Body? 7 Reasons
Body skin blemishes may be minor or significant imperfections.
Dermatologists cannot always tell what caused them, but sometimes they can. It all depends on the type of blemish.
Below, you will see some of the most common types, along with an explanation of what causes them.
Freckles are clumps of the skin’s pigment melanin. They appear
primarily in light skinned individuals. Some freckles seem to be permanent, while others seem to be related to sun
exposure. The sun’s UV rays stimulate melanin production. Melanin in the upper layers helps to protect the deepest
of the skin’s layers from sun damage.
Some birth marks are caused by overgrowth of melanin-producing
cells. Others are caused by overgrowth of blood vessels near the skin’s surface. The first group typically appears
brown or black in color. The second appears red or pink. The exact cause of birth marks is unknown, but they are
not hereditary.
Also known as liver spots and solar lentigos, age spots are much
like freckles in that they are clumps of melanin. These body skin blemishes appear later in life as a result of
excessive sun exposure and free radical damage to the melanin-producing cells.
Pimples may be related to acne, but many people without acne
have pimples as a result of clogged pores, tight clothing or the use of low quality skincare products. A pimple is
actually a minor infection within the skin’s pore.
The pore becomes clogged trapping bacteria and sebum within the
narrow channel. Inflammation occurs as the infection worsens and can become more serious if the clog is not
removed.
Blackheads are sometimes associated with acne and pimples, but
the cause is excessive sebum production. The sebum accumulates and combines with particles of dead skin cells.
Those materials darken as a result of oxidation.
Scars are among the most common body skin blemishes. They may be
caused by acne pimples or injury.
They are composed of normal collagen, the same protein found in
the skin’s elastic fibers and to some degree in all of the skin’s layers. But, the collagen is formed quickly by
the body in order to repair the wound. So, the “weave” of the collagen is slightly different. The fibers tend to be
woven in a single direction, rather than in many directions which is normally the case. It normally takes years for
the body to create new collagen fibers.
Stretch marks are often troublesome body skin blemishes. They
are a kind of scar. But, instead of being caused by an external injury, they are caused by excessive stretching and
tearing inside the skin’s dermis layer. This may occur as a result of excessive weight gain, body building,
pregnancy or sudden changes that sometimes occur during puberty.
