What Causes Old Ugly Looking Wrinkles? 8 Causes

The causes of ugly old looking wrinkles are numerous.  Here you will learn about each of the causes.  In most people, it’s not just one cause, but a number of causes that combine to create the visible signs of aging.

Here are 8 reasons or causes why you could get old looking wrinkles and 1 way to stop the wrinkling.

Since you want to either get rid of or prevent having wrinkles that are well, ugly, here are 8 reasons why they happen.  And one real good solution that works.  Please read.

1.       Dry Skin

Dry skin is a cause of wrinkles and sagging.  Aged skin often appears rough and dry, because of a lack of moisture.  Decreased sebum production might accompany the aging process.  During our youth, sebum helps to hold moisture in the cells, keeping them firm and soft.

2.       Sun Exposure

Sun exposure is a problem for several reasons.  First, it can cause excessive dryness, as can the wind and cold.  Second, when exposed to UV light from the sun, free radical molecules within the skin begin to behave strangely.  Third, as we age, there are fewer antioxidants in our skin and more free radicals.  The radical molecules can eventually damage the cellular structures and cause wrinkles.

3.       Poor Nutrition

Poor nutrient intake or poor nutrient absorption may accompany the aging process.  A lack of antioxidants in the diet will mean there are even fewer antioxidants in the skin.  As a result, there will be more free radical damage and more visible signs of aging.

4.        Decreased Collagen Production

Collagen is a structural protein partially responsible for the skin’s strength and firmness.  Nutrient intake and absorption also plays a role in collagen production.  For example, a lack of vitamin C will cause the collagen fibers produced to be weaker.  Decreased collagen production naturally accompanies the aging process.

Fewer fibers means that the skin will be less firm, which in turn means that wrinkling is more likely.  In addition to contributing to wrinkles, decreased collagen in the skin makes it more transparent, this is one of the causes of age-related dark circles beneath the eyes.

5.        Low Levels of Hyaluronic Acid

Older skin contains less hyaluronic acid, another compound that contributes to firm skin and reduces the risk of under eye circles.  Hyaluronic acid also plays a role in skin cell production, which is the next cause of old looking wrinkles.

Decreased Skin Cell Turnover

During our youth, the skin’s cells are replaced every few weeks.  As we age, the replacement process slows down.  That causes a couple of problems.  First, the skin’s layers become thinner.  Second, the outer layer of cells starts to look older, simply because they are older.  They are waiting to be replaced.

6.        Advanced Glycation End-products—AGEs

AGEs were only recently identified as a cause of wrinkles.  They are produced within the body in response to excessive simple carbs in the diet and can cause a variety of health problems.

7.        Inflammation

Chronic inflammation damages and degrades the skin’s elastic collagen fibers.  One of the things caused by AGEs and free radicals is inflammation.  Weak collagen fibers equal more wrinkles.

8.       Toxins

Toxins like those in cigarette smoke cause increased production and activity of free radicals.  This is why smokers and people who work around toxic smoke have more wrinkles.  As you can see, many, but not all, of the causes of wrinkles are related to free radical damage.  In my next article, you will learn about the solutions to ugly old looking wrinkles. How to Solve Ugly Old Looking Wrinkles
